Interior Design Budgeting: Where to Spend and Where to Save

August 16, 2026•By HDE Editorial Team

Interior design can easily cost as much as the structural construction if not planned properly. Here is how you can achieve a premium look on a budget.

Where to SPEND (Do Not Compromise)

  1. Kitchen Hardware: Invest in high-quality hinges, channels, and hydraulic systems (like Hettich or Blum). Cheap hardware will rust and break within a year.
  2. Bathroom Fittings: Faucets and concealed flush tanks are difficult to repair once installed. Always buy reputed brands with long warranties.
  3. Lighting: Good lighting makes cheap furniture look expensive. Invest in a layered lighting plan (ambient, task, and accent lights).

Where to SAVE (Cut Costs)

  1. False Ceilings: You do not need complex, multi-layered POP false ceilings in every room. Keep it simple with a peripheral ceiling just to hide the wiring.
  2. Veneer vs. Laminate: Wood veneers look beautiful but require expensive polishing and maintenance. High-quality textured laminates provide the same look at a fraction of the cost.
  3. Custom Furniture: Instead of getting everything custom-built by a carpenter, mix custom wardrobes with ready-made loose furniture (sofas, dining tables) bought during seasonal sales.
